Free Handyman Invoice Template

Short answer

A handyman invoice lists each task completed with its price, adds materials and any tasks added on the day, and shows the total, due date and how to pay.

A handyman invoice is usually short, but the client reads every line because each one is a job they watched you do. Listing tasks the way you quoted them, adding anything they asked for on the day, and keeping materials on their own line makes the total feel fair. Small invoices are also the ones that get forgotten, so make paying easy, ideally before you have packed the van.

What to include in a handyman invoice

  • Each completed task

The same task descriptions and prices as the quote, so the client can tick them off.

  • Tasks added on the day

Anything extra the client asked for while you were there, as its own line with its price.

  • Tasks not done

If a task was dropped or referred to another trade, remove it from the invoice or show it at zero with a note.

  • Materials

Consumables on one line and any larger purchased item on its own line, ideally with the receipt available on request.

  • Minimum charge or travel

If the visit was charged at your minimum or included travel, show it as a line so the arithmetic is clear.

  • Payment details

A due date, even a short one, and how to pay: card on the spot, a payment link or bank transfer.

How to write a handyman invoice, step by step

  1. Tick off the quoted tasks

Mark each quoted task as done, and remove or zero any that were not.

  2. Add what was agreed on the day

Add every extra task with a clear description and the price you told the client.

  3. Total the materials

Add up consumables and any larger items you bought for the job.

  4. Check the minimum

Make sure the visit meets your minimum charge, and show it if it applies.

  5. Send or hand it over before you leave

Clients pay small invoices quickest while the work is in front of them.

Payment terms and getting paid

Payment on completion is the norm for handyman work, with a short term such as seven days for regular clients, landlords or property managers. Repeat clients who book you often may prefer one invoice at the end of the month; agree it with them rather than switching by default.

A polite reminder a day or two after the due date is usually all a small invoice needs. Taking a card payment on the spot avoids most of the chasing in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

Should a handyman invoice include tasks that were not done?
Remove them, or keep them at zero with a short note such as "referred to electrician". Leaving a quoted price on a task you did not do is the fastest way to lose a client's trust.
How do I invoice for materials bought for the job?
List consumables as one line and larger items separately, at the price you agreed or at cost plus any markup you stated on the quote. Keep the receipts in case the client asks.
Can I send one invoice for several visits?
Yes, for regular clients. List each visit by date with its tasks, so the client can match the invoice to the days you were there.
What if the client wants to pay in cash?
Accept it if you are comfortable, give them a receipt or mark the invoice paid with the date, and keep the record for your accounts like any other payment.
