Free Electrician Quote Template

Short answer

An electrician quote prices each circuit, fixture and material, plus labour hours and any permit, with a deposit and an expiry date the client agrees to.

Electrical work is hard for a client to picture. They see a light switch; you see a panel that may already be at capacity, a run of cable through a finished ceiling and an inspection to book. A good electrician quote turns that hidden work into lines the client can read, so the price makes sense before you start and the conversation about "why does it cost that much" happens on paper rather than on site.

What to include in an electrician quote

  • Scope by circuit and room

Name each circuit, fixture and outlet and where it goes ("2 × 20A circuits, kitchen counter"). Vague lines such as "electrical work, kitchen" are the ones clients question later.

  • Materials separate from labour

Show cable, breakers, boxes and fixtures as their own lines, and labour as hours times your rate. If the client supplies their own fixtures, say so, and say whether you warranty them.

  • Permit and inspection

State whether the job needs a permit, who applies for it, whether the fee is in the price, and that the job is not finished until it passes inspection.

  • Assumptions about the existing wiring

Write down what you are assuming: the panel has spare capacity, the existing wiring is in serviceable condition, there is access through the loft or crawl space. If an assumption turns out wrong, you have a clear basis for a revised quote.

  • What is not included

Patching and painting drywall after cutting access holes is the classic dispute. Say whether you make good, leave it for the decorator, or price it as an option.

  • Validity and deposit

Copper and equipment prices move, so give the quote an expiry date, often 30 days, and state any deposit due on acceptance to cover materials you order in.

How to write an electrician quote, step by step

  1. Survey before you price

Check the panel, the route for new cable and anything that would change the job, such as aluminium wiring or an undersized service. A quote written from a phone description is a guess.

  2. Break the job into circuits and fixtures

One line per circuit, fixture type or task, each with a quantity and unit price. This also makes it easy to remove an item if the client wants to trim the budget.

  3. Price labour honestly

Estimate hours per task, include time for testing and labelling the panel, and use one hourly rate for the job so the client can follow the arithmetic.

  4. Add permits, disposal and travel

Permit fees, removal of old fittings and call-out or travel charges belong on the quote, not as surprises on the invoice.

  5. Write the terms

Expiry date, deposit, payment schedule, warranty on workmanship and how extra work is handled. Keep it to a few short lines.

  6. Send it while the visit is fresh

Clients often ask more than one electrician. A clear quote that arrives the same day or the next is easier to say yes to.

Deposits and payment terms

For a small repair, payment on completion is normal. For an installation where you buy fixtures, cable and breakers up front, a deposit on acceptance covers those materials and confirms the booking; a larger job can be split into a deposit, a stage payment after rough-in, and the balance after inspection.

Whatever schedule you choose, put it on the quote with amounts, not just percentages, so the client agrees to the exact figures. Some places limit how much a contractor may take before work starts, so check the rules where you work.

Frequently asked questions

Should an electrician quote include the permit fee?
Yes, if you apply for the permit. Show it as its own line so the client sees what the authority charges and what you charge for the work. If the client is pulling the permit, say that on the quote instead.
How do I quote when I cannot see inside the walls?
Quote for the job as you can see it and state your assumptions plainly. Add a line saying that if you find damaged or unsafe wiring you will stop, explain it and agree a price before continuing.
Should I charge for writing a quote?
Many electricians quote small jobs for free and charge a survey fee for larger ones, sometimes deducted from the job if the client goes ahead. Whatever you do, tell the client before the visit.
