Free Handyman Quote Template

Short answer

A handyman quote lists each small task as its own line with a price, separates materials, sets a minimum charge and says what happens if a job turns out bigger.

Handyman work is a list of small jobs, and the risk is that a quote for "odd jobs, about a day" turns into a disagreement about which jobs were in the day. Pricing each task on its own line solves most of that. The client can see what each fix costs, drop the ones they can live without and add new ones later at a price they can predict. It also protects you from the job that grows: the loose shelf that turns out to be a rotten wall is a new line, not a free extra.

What to include in a handyman quote

  • One line per task

Describe each repair by location and result ("rehang 3 interior doors so they close freely"). Clients add and remove tasks, and separate lines make that painless.

  • Per-task price or hourly with an estimate

Fixed prices per task are easiest to accept. If you work hourly, give an estimated total and say you will check in before going over it.

  • Minimum charge and travel

If you have a minimum visit charge or a travel fee for distant jobs, say so on the quote rather than adding it at the end.

  • Materials, and who buys them

Either you supply and charge for materials, or the client provides them. State which, and whether you charge for picking items up.

  • Where your work stops

Many places limit the electrical, plumbing or structural work a handyman can take on without a licence. Say which jobs you will refer to a licensed trade.

  • Expiry and scheduling

A validity date, and how you schedule: a half day, a full day, or the tasks booked one by one.

How to write a handyman quote, step by step

  1. Walk the house with the list

Go through every task with the client, take photos and check access. Small jobs hide surprises too, such as a door frame that is out of square.

  2. Price each task

Give each task a fixed price based on your time and materials, rounding to numbers the client can read quickly.

  3. Group materials

Put consumables (filler, caulk, screws) on one materials line, and list any larger item, such as a new fan or door handle, separately.

  4. Add your minimum and travel

Make sure the total is at least your minimum visit charge, and add travel if the job is outside your usual area.

  5. Note what is excluded

Flag any task you will not do, or will only do as far as a licensed trade allows, so the client is not surprised on the day.

  6. Send it with a suggested date

A quote that offers a specific day is easier to accept than one that leaves scheduling for later.

Deposits and payment terms

Most handyman jobs are paid on completion, because the material cost is small and the work takes hours rather than weeks. For a larger job, or one where you buy an expensive item such as a vanity or a storm door, it is reasonable to ask the client to pay for that item up front or to take a deposit.

Say on the quote how you take payment, and that the minimum charge applies even if the work takes less time. If you add a late fee, state it at the quote stage; rules on late fees vary by place, so check the rules where you work.

Frequently asked questions

Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?
Per task is easier for clients to accept and protects you from being blamed for slow work you could not avoid. Hourly suits jobs you cannot see the end of. Many handymen use fixed prices for common tasks and hourly for everything else.
How do I quote a long list of small jobs?
Put each job on its own line with its own price, then a total. The client can trim the list to their budget, and adding tasks later is simple.
Should I have a minimum charge?
Most handymen do, because travel and setup cost the same for a five-minute job as for a two-hour one. State it on every quote so a short visit never becomes an argument.
